      Overview of Ryanair

Ryanair is an ultra-low-cost air firm based in Ireland. As one of Europe’s largest budget airlines, Ryanair’s fleet flies to 180 destinations in 27 countries in Europe. Its fleet’s configuration is fairly straight forward. They only offer Economy Class. As per typical cheap business model tactics, the company makes heavy use of extra charges to sell accompanying services.

      Ryanair Baggage Allowance Policy

Ryanair’s baggage policy may be unambiguous, but their shady upsell scheme is. Here is the most comprehensive breakdown of Ryanair’s baggage policy.

Unless you’re a priority passenger, you will only get to bring on board one small bag of 15.7 x 7.9 x 9.8 in (40 x 20 x 25 cm) that fits in the under-seat compartment in front of them. Such bag should be either a: rucksack; handbag; laptop bag.

If you intend to bring a musical instrument along, make sure that it fits snugly in your bag, or else you’d have to have it checked, in which case it will cost extra.

If you wish to bring more stuff on board, there’s a few ways. But you’re going to have to take a detour. If you wish to bring more baggage on board, you must purchase what’s called Priority & 2 Cabin Bags. As the name suggests, you will be able to carry on board a second bag, which can’t exceed 22 pounds (10 kg) in weight and 21.7 x 15.7x 7.9 in (55 x 40 x 20 cm). The price starts at £12.99, should you purchase this at the time of booking online. Be very wary though, as it can vary wildly. If you purchase this at the boarding gate, the price will shoot up to £45.99.

Technically, Ryanair doesn’t allow any checked baggage. That is, of course, unless you pay. In fact, each passenger can purchase up to three checked bags. Each can’t exceed 31.9 x 46.9 x 46.9 in (81 x 119 x 119 cm) in dimensions and 44 pounds (22 kg) in weight.

Such purchases should be made upon booking your flight, or no later than 2 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time. These bags cost £20.99 at least per bag per person per flight and can easily skyrocket to £59.99 depending on various factors like route, travel date, or season.

Passengers can also check-in sports equipment and musical instruments, as long as they don’t exceed 44 pounds (20 kg). If you happen to carry a bike on board, make sure it doesn’t exceed 66 pounds (30 kg) or it will be denied. The fee will vary wildly from £35 to £75 depending on what you bring and when you book it.

Any medical items can be brought on board free of charge, but it will be subject to examination and clearance by Ryanair’s Special Assistance team.

Ryanair will charge you extra if your baggage exceeds 20 kg. This means that, even if you have purchased the bag space, you’d still have to pay even more if you push it even the least bit. The charge rate will be determined on the day of travelling. The current rate is £11 per extra kilo (or local currency equivalent).

Luckily, Ryanair has given some rare leeway for the customer to circumvent the extra weight problems. What you can do in such cases is to share. It’d be easier if you’re travelling with your family or in a posse, but it isn’t entirely impossible otherwise.

What happens in such cases, is that the cumulative baggage weight shall not exceed the cumulative allowed weight. In layman’s terms, if you share with another passenger, and you both have two bags, then just make sure that they don’t exceed 88 pounds (40 kg) in total.

      FAQs

If you’re travelling with a child, you can carry 2 items of baby equipment for free per child.

Infants (aged 8 days to 23 months) are not allowed any cabin space. However, parents accompanying them are allowed to carry a baby bag of up to 11 pounds (5 kg) in weight and 17.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in in dimension (45 x 35 x 20 cm). The baby shall remain on the adult’s lap at all times.

They will be rejected at the boarding gate. In places that do accept them, there will be a fee of £69.99 (subject to VAT on domestic flights at applicable government rates). Do check with the Bag Drop desk at the airport before going through security.
