How Much Luggage Can I Take On Garuda?

As with every airline, passengers’ baggage must comply with size and weight restrictions to ensure safety during the flight. Therefore, to avoid any hassle before and during boarding, check if your handbags abide by the following rules:

    • Within dimensions of 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in);  wheels, handles, side-pockets included

    • Weight less than 7 kg (15 lbs).

Please note that there’s an exception for the Economy cabin on CRJ and ATR aircraft. Due to limited interior space, your handbag should be:

    • Within dimensions of 41 x 34 x 17 cm (16 x 13 x 7 in);  wheels, handles, and side pockets included

    • Weight less than 7 kg (15 lbs).

In addition to the free cabin baggage allowance, you are also entitled to a free personal item, such as:

    • Laptop bag, handbag, purse, or pocketbook

    • An Overcoat, wrap, or blanket

    • Cabin-size baby stroller or infant-carrying basket

    • Specialised equipment to support incapacitated passengers.

*For an extensive list of the special and banned items, please refer to the airline's main website or contact their information centre.

Best Luggage for Garuda Indonesia (and all airlines)

Garuda’s rules are pretty tight, especially on smaller planes, so having the right bag matters.

If you’ve ever been that person nervously eyeing the scales at check-in, you’ll know the feeling. We travel too, and we’ve learned the hard way that airlines don’t mess about when it comes to cabin size and weight.

That’s exactly why CabinZero exists. We build our backpacks the way we actually travel.

Lightweight from the start. Soft-sided so they slide into overhead bins or underseat space without fuss—even on those CRJ and ATR planes where space is really limited.

What do you get from our underseat backpack? Fewer checks, fewer hassles, and way more time thinking about where you’re going next

We’ve travelled with these bags ourselves, and that’s exactly why we trust them.

Curious? Take a look at CabinZero backpacks and see which one fits your next trip.

    Garuda Indonesia’s Checked Baggage Policy

Checked baggage, also known as registered baggage, is transported in a separate hold and is not accessible to passengers during flights. The free checked bag allowance varies based on the fare type and destination/departure.

Generally, no bags are allowed to be heavier than 32 kg (70 lbs). Two or more passengers travelling together as one party can share their baggage allowance.

For international flights, passengers are entitled to:

    • Economy: 30 kg (66 lbs)

    • Business: 40 kg (88 lbs)

    • First class: 50 kg (110 lbs).

Economy Comfort and Economy Premium tickets get a free baggage allowance of 40 kg (88 lbs) for flights between LHR airport and all international destinations.

Children and infants with seats get the same baggage allowance as adults. Children and infants without seats are allowed 10 kg (22 lbs) free bags. In addition, adults travelling with them can bring one fully collapsible stroller/pushchair, infant carrying basket or infant car seat free of charge.

Note: The above allowance applies to specific routes only. For information about other destinations, please access the airline’s main website.

How much does Garuda charge for extra baggage?

Per the airline’s rules and regulations, any baggage that exceeds the size and weight restrictions will incur a fee. The amount varies based on the destinations you are travelling to/from.

For flights from London to certain places, the cost is between GBP 14-44 (the average rate is about GBP 28). This rate only applies to flights operated by Garuda Indonesia.

How do I add baggage to my Garuda flight?

You can purchase Prepaid Excess Baggage in advance if you want to carry more goods and avoid paying the excess fee. You can do so via the Garuda Indonesia Ticketing Office, website, and mobile app (at least 24 hours before departure time).

These come in eight packages for passengers to choose from. Each person is subjected to one package per sector only. They range from 5 kg (11 lbs) to 40 kg (88 lbs), with an incentive of 5 kg (11 lbs) per package.

    • Surfing Board: ≤ 23 kg (50 lbs)

    • Diving Equipment: ≤ 23 kg (50 lbs)

Passengers must notify the airline at least 48 hours before departure that they will be bringing a CPAP device on board.

When boarding, there are certain rules that passengers must follow:

    • The device must not interfere with the electrical, navigation, or communication equipment on the aircraft.

    • The device must be stowed in the seat in front of them or in a designated location so as not to obstruct the aisle.

    • If used, the passenger must ensure that the device does not allow other passengers to access any required emergency or regular exit or the aisle.
