Pack your swimwear and enjoy San Diego's 70 miles of coastline with the city's year-round temperature and weather. Beach time in the city usually means a variety of things, from surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and whale watching.

If you bring the whole crew along, check out family-friendly spots like Mission Beach, Coronado Beach or La Jolla Shores for its calmer waves and atmosphere.

You can also explore the city further by hiking along the sandstone cliffs at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve before stopping by the town's famous breweries or wineries to taste some artisan beverages.

Not only pristine beaches, this Southern California city also has water parks, theme parks, and kid-friendly museums for everyone to explore all day long. For little comic fans, don't miss out on San Diego Comic-Con, held annually in San Diego, which is also the largest comic convention in the world.

2. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Best for Budget Plans

From Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, families are sure to run out of time before they run out of fun at "Kidsburgh". The city also welcomes families with affordable lunch spots and free subway rides to explore the town. It makes for a great, affordable family holiday with an old-school town charm.

If your family is a big sports fan, you can root for the Steelers at Heinz Field or catch a game at PNC Park. For nature lovers, you can stroll through the Victorian greenhouse at Phipps Conservatory or hike through the 150 miles of Great Allegheny Passage - or both of them.

3. Yosemite National Park - Best for More Active Holidays

Spanning 1,200 square miles, Yosemite welcomes families with a world of wonders, its popular waterfalls, beautiful mountains, valleys and forests.

There are many hikes for active travellers to test their fitness. Although not all are for average hikers (you'd better save trails like Half Dome for the pros), the views at the end will pay off.

The park is also one of the best places in the world for rock climbing. You can bump into many brave climbers who want to conquer the El Capitan's 3000-foot vertical rock face.

Landmarks like Mariposa Grove and Half Dome are worth visiting for first-timers. After a long day of exploring, have a good time strolling and eating at the family-friendly Yosemite Valley.

4. Gatlinburg, Tennessee - Best For Sweep Views

Gatlinburg is the gateway to the massive Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That's why many attractions in town can offer families a sweeping view of the nearby park.

But where can you get the best view of the town? Check out the Gatlinburg SkyLift, where you can ride to the top of the Mountain at 1,800 feet elevation.

Then, try to cross the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America right there and pass through the lush forests. Last but not least, don't forget to bring your kids to the Gatlinburg Space Needle observation deck (up to 407 feet) for a bird's eye view of the city.

While in Gatlinburg, try renting a cabin. Whether going on a weekend getaway with your other half or with a large family, you can find perfect lodging from 340 Cabins of the Smoky Mountains.

Arriving with toddlers? This village in the Smokies is tailored to take care of that, with its pancake houses, candy shops, and craft galleries dotting around the town.

5. Outer Banks - Laid-Back Family Breaks

If you want to take a break from the bustling city, consider Outer Banks - a small town with the charm of a tight-knit community. Within this area, you can hop into all types of water excursions, from fishing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing to kiteboarding. Scuba diving and snorkelling here are super popular as they are the best way to explore 3,000 shipwrecks underwater of “the graveyard of the Atlantic”.

Above anything else, families love the OBX for secluded beaches and rugged dunes that won't feel touristy all year round. Yet you still can find a comfy stay at the ocean edge, like Surf Side Hotel, along with restaurants, shops, and galleries to fill your itinerary.

You can also have a day out visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial, hearing the stories of Wilbur and Orville Wright marking the birthplace of powered flight. Visiting the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island and a round of mini golf courses are classic family things to do at the OBX.

6. Orlando, Florida - Best for Theme Parks

The Florida city is an all-time favourite stop for families and kids of any age. Why? Let's just say Universal Studios Orlando and Walt Disney World. That would be convincing enough. But don't miss the nearby tourist destinations like Universal’s Volcano Bay and SeaWorld Orlando.

Orlando is more than just a home of theme parks, however. Beautiful golf courses coupled with a subtropical climate make the city a great escape for golfers.

For something that the whole family will enjoy together, browse the shops at the Mall at Millenia or treat yourself to good food at a fine dining restaurant. For a break from the crowd, visit the tropical garden of Harry P. Leu Gardens to breathe in the fresh air or see a Broadway performance at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

7. Cape Cod, Massachusetts - Best for Summertime Holidays

Fresh lobster rolls and the expansive sandy coasts of Cape Cod are the call of summer for any Boston-ites. The peninsula is for big adventures in the outdoors, with a 22-mile scenic trail rail and 550 miles of pristine beaches.

On a single day, you can plan to visit the 19th-century Nauset Lighthouse for your family members to learn about marine history and Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for kids to know more about the wildlife.

The biggest fun for the kids, however, should be the spectacular whale-watching show. You should be at Cape Cod between April and October as the whales arrive from warmer climes to feed in the teeming waters.

For an all-in-one family getaway spot, we suggest checking in Villages at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club, on the northern tip of Cape Cod. The resort is kid-friendly, as you will soon find your little ones losing track of time with the paddle-boarding, oyster bed tours, and kayaking there.

8. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina - Best For Watersports Playground

There are plenty of activities you can do by the shore at Myrtle Beach. Bikers will immediately be pulled by the nutmeg-coloured sand that is compact to pedal on. Off the shoreline is the clear water perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Even on a lazy day when you don't want to get wet, you can otherwise rent a paddleboard or kayak to discover the coastal town at your own pace.

Myrtle Beach is also a hidden golf holiday destination, with 90 championship courses for all skill levels. You can still catch up with some good rounds during your family holidays, as most golf courses are free for kids under 16 with a paying adult.

9. Williamsburg, Virginia - Best For Historic Districts

Williamsburg is long known as a historical town with a famed living museum called Colonial Williamsburg. Here, history comes to life as you interact with actors in period costumes who vividly portray daily life in Colonial America. Next, take your kiddos to Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center for a complete historical journey.

But, if you are there for an active getaway, the city also has three large waterparks. Water Country USA, the biggest of them all, has everything from water slides, raft rides, and pools to water coasters for all the water thrills your kids will look for. You can also get some sweat at the Virginia Capital Trail, a paved bicycle path of 52 miles that connects the city with Richmond.

10. Redwood National & State Parks - Best For Reconnection With The Nature

You can find some of the tallest trees in the Redwood National & State Parks alongside old redwoods, prairies, and long coastlines. There is also Elk Meadow where kids and adults alike will be excited spotting herds of elk grazing.

We recommend signing up for guided tide pool walks for those without a lot of time to get by the ocean back home. If you're lucky, you can catch whales between December and April.

If this is the first hike of your kiddos, consider starting at Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail. Stretching 1.5 miles and fairly flat, the trail lets them explore the tall trees and magical rolling fog without having to tak
