Are you about to board a Lufthansa flight? If that's the case, you won't want to miss this detailed reference on Lufthansa's baggage allowance requirements.

In this article, we'll go over the most important things you should know if you're flying with Lufthansa, which will greatly assist you in your flight preparation.

Overview of Lufthansa

Lufthansa is the flagship as well as largest airline of Germany. When combined with its subsidiaries, Lufthansa becomes the largest airline in Europe. It offers flights to 18 points in Germany and 78 countries worldwide.

Lufthansa offers a great variety of configurations. It has one-cabin to four-cabin configurations that may include First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy Class and Economy Class.

Such configuration flexibility may sometimes be a bit confounding to passengers as the perks and restrictions vary wildly, especially when it comes matters such as baggage allowance. • 22 x 21 x 6 in (57 x 54 x 15 cm), if it’s a foldable garment bag.

Sporting equipment and musical instruments policy

Musical instruments

You can bring it on board if it’s small (a harmonica, an ukulele) and it conforms to the carry-on baggage allowance. Keep in mind that if it’s edging the limit then it will be counted as one piece of luggage.

If your instrument is larger than the allowance, Lufthansa allows musical instruments to be checked into hold on a special tariff. Generally, it should be under 21 x 15 x 9 in (55 x 40 x 23 cm) in dimensions. Should it go over this limit, the owner must purchase an additional. This must be booked when they book their tickets. The musical instruments taken on-board must not exceed:

  • 61 x 16.5 x 10 in (155 x 42 x 25 cm) for musical instruments that stand in the cabin;
  • 43 x 16.5 x 20 in (110 x 42 x 50 cm) for musical instruments strapped to the seat;
  • 165 lbs (75 kg).

Sporting equipment

Lufthansa will carry sporting equipment of up to 70 lbs (32 in weight) and 124 in (315 cm) in length. Any equipment that exceeds this limit will be charged for cargo transport. However, once the sport equipment goes over the free baggage allowance and the weight limit of the respective travel class but does not exceed the maximum weight of 70 lbs (32 kg), flat rates for sports equipment will be applied.

Lufthansa’s rate for sporting equipment varies wildly depending on your equipment and your route. The best way to check how much you will have to pay extra for your bag (if you have to) is to use the calculator provided on Lufthansa’s official website.

Excess baggage policy

Your baggage will be considered to be excess baggage when it exceeds:

  • In Economy and Premium Economy Class, 50 lbs (23 kg) up to 70 lbs (32 kg) in weight and 62 in (158 cm) up to 115 in (292 cm) in cumulative dimensions;
  • In Business and First Class, 62 in (158 cm) up to 115 in (292 cm) in cumulative dimensions.

In these cases, you will be charged the flat rates for excess baggage. Again, the rate varies wildly, so do refer to the calculator provided on Lufthansa’s official website.
