Cabin Bags - Why You Should Travel With Carry-on Luggage Bag Only

For short trips and city breaks, checked luggage is an unnecessary expense. Instead, get yourself a good cabin bag. Not only could they get you out of the long queue and hassle of waiting in line for your checked luggage, but also save you some extra money, and most importantly, time.

There’s definitely a reason why more and more people prefer to travel carry-on only. The obvious answer is that it allows them to just sprint through the airport and get to the destination as quickly as possible, without wasting a minute waiting for checked luggage. Cabin bags are great if you’re going on a weekend break that doesn’t need to include big chunks of clothes like warm jackets, or big bottles of alcohol.

#TeamCarryOn might have tons of reasons why they travel with only a cabin bag, and never check their luggage. These might also include fear of missing/delaying luggage, the need to get out of the airport right after landing, or the perks of travelling light and staying with the minimalist packing style. Having fewer belongings means fewer outfit decisions to be made, and less time to worry about things that might get lost.

And why cabin backpacks? Think of the times you get in a taxi with that bulky suitcase. Think of the craggy sidewalks that would make your suitcase’s wheels wretched. Think of the 5th floor apartment in France with no elevator, and there you go dragging your suitcase up the stairs by yourself. Yup, that’s exactly why you should care about getting yourself a good cabin backpack.

Use this text to answer questions in as much Carry-on bags can be a huge life-saver, but only when you pick the right one - so choose them wisely. Getting the right cabin bag is just as important as choosing the right companion - as it will take care of all your belongings during the journey, and it should be the right size required by the airlines you’re travelling with, so you won’t be at the airport paying extra money to the airline just because of that one extra centimetre.

The first thing you should look for in a cabin bag is whether it complies with the airline’s baggage regulations. While there is a common cabin bag size restriction, it’s not a ‘one-size-fit-all’, and each airline has their own requirements for the dimension and weight of your cabin baggage. To avoid any hassle paying excess baggage fees at the airport, make sure you check this carefully on the airline’s website before getting yourself a piece of cabin luggage.

Now once you know about the size restrictions of your airline, we’ll get to the fun stuff. Choosing a good cabin bag is everything from good fabric, volume, key specifications, dimensions, styles, colours, compartments, handles, zippers, shoulder straps, side pockets, etc. If you’re a beginner, this might seem quite mind-boggling. But don’t worry, we’ve tailored a complete guide on how to choose the best cabin bag if you’re not sure what to look for - check out Top 7 Best Carry-on Backpacks and a Guide to Shopping Backpack for Your Next Trip. Carry-on bags can be a huge life-saver, but only when you pick the right one - so choose them wisely. Getting the right cabin bag is just as important as choosing the right companion - as it will take care of all your belongings during the journey, and it should be the right size required by the airlines you’re travelling with, so you won’t be at the airport paying extra money to the airline just because of that one extra centimetre.

The most common bag size to be allowed on board is 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 inches) including handles and trolley wheels. Most airlines will allow you to bring one carry-on bag and one small personal item (such as a purse, laptop bag, tote bag, shoulder bag or bum bag) that does not exceed 22 x 25 x 43 cm (9 x 10 x 17 inches). Your cabin bag and personal item must fit the overhead cabin locker or underneath the seat in front of you.

However, this doesn’t apply to all carriers and varies by airlines. Some have smaller or larger bag sizes in their hand luggage policy which might depend on your booking class and the aircraft’s model. All airlines have a sizer at the boarding gate and they might ask you to measure your luggage before you board. If your cabin bags exceed that measurement, you might have to check your luggage, or pay for excess baggage fees.

Before you pack your cabin bag (or buy a new one), make sure you check carefully with your carrier about the weight and size you’re allowed to bring on board, especially if you’re flying with low-cost airlines, to avoid any extra fees that you might incur.

If you’re taking an international flight, how much weight you put in your cabin baggage also matters. You will have to comply with the airline’s weight restrictions, otherwise there will be situations where you need to pay additional fees or check in your luggage if it’s overweight.

Like the size restrictions, there is no fixed number for weight restrictions applied to all airlines. This usually ranges from 6 kg (13.2 lbs) to 12 kg (26.5 lbs), and sometimes this number means both items of your carry-on baggage (your cabin bag and your personal item). So you should check this carefully on the airline website as well before you pack.

First, let’s talk about what’s NOT allowed. These include:

- Sharp objects like scissors with blades longer than 10 cm, knives, tent spikes, needles, etc. These items should be carefully wrapped and put in your checked luggage.

- Sporting equipment like hockey sticks, golf clubs, baseball bats, cricket bats, etc.

- Self defence items like guns, pepper spray, etc. You can pack them in your checked luggage if they are equipped with a safety mechanism and won’t cause any damage by accident.

Now that you’re aware of the items not permitted on the plane, let’s see what you’re allowed to take with you:

- Portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and standard-sized laptops.

- Liquids, gels and aerosols - each of them must come in a container that’s not over 100ml, and all of them must fit in a single transparent plastic zipper bag under 1 litre.

- Medication including prescription and over-the-counter medicines

- Baby food like breast milk, baby formula, processed food are allowed - and do not count in the 100ml restriction.

- Power banks with less than 100W

- E-cigarettes and vapes as long as they contain less than 100ml of liquid.

- Matches and lighters: One book of safety matches and common lighters. However, this can depend on the airport security of the country you’re travelling from, some will allow common lighters while some don’t at all.

- Compact musical instruments such as a flute or a violin - these can be considered a piece of hand luggage. If you’re taking a guitar or a cello with you, you need to check with the airline in advance.

- Alcoholic beverages (up to 70% alcohol) or wine bottles are allowed if they’re unopened and still in retail packaging. You’ll need to check with the airlines for the limits of alcoholic beverages of the country you’re travelling to.

What about your carry-on checklist? Just remember you should always pack the things you need the most in your carry-on bag:

- Passport

- Electronic devices such as phones and laptops

- Money (cash and credit cards)

- Daily medications

- Small toiletries

- A change of clothes

- Valuable items

- Things you can only pack in a carry-on, like e-cigarettes and lithium batteries

Well, CabinZero means Cabin-sized + Zero Hassle (compared to checked luggage, of course). We believe travel should be fun and straightforward, which is why we’re here to design lightweight cabin bags that fit most airlines' cabin baggage requirements - making your journey simple and hassle-free. Our Classic 28L backpacks come with the dimensions of 39 x 29,5 x 20 cm (15.4 x 11.6 x 7.9 inches), and fit well with Ryanair’s baggage policy (and if you’re safe with Ryanair, you’re safe with any other airlines, really).

Apart from the 28L backpacks, we’ve developed cabin bags of other sizes and functions as well - ranging from 32L, 36L to 42L and 44L, from Classic backpacks with basic functionality to Adventure backpacks with more advanced features. All sizes for every airline, and various functionalities for different needs, we’re here to give you the best from your travel experience - whatever you need, wherever you are in the world.

While being the right size is one important thing, being practical is another. Our bags are designed based on the fundamental idea of creating ‘the suitcase on your back’ - pack it like a suitcase and carry it as a backpack. Most of our cabin backpack designs allow you to open up the bag from the top straight to the bottom, which turns it into a suitcase-like operation when packing. Our 28L backpacks can comfortably fit enough for a weekend getaway trip. We combine minimalist design, practicality, convenience and efficiency - making your journey at the airport as smooth and hassle free as possible.

And did we mention our accessories that are designed to be your perfect second carry-on personal item? Shoulder bags, bum bags or compact 12L backpacks - get your passport, mobile phone and boarding passes close at hand when you need them at the airport.
